Assuming that somehow what racing really needs is another international Formula car class, the FIA recently announced plans to resurrect a new version of the same Formula 2 category it consigned to history with the creation of Formula 3000 in 1985.
This new F2 is intended to be a feeder series launched next season as an “inexpensive platform to develop emerging driver talent for Formula 1.” The target budget level is theoretically “around €250,000 a car, per season.”
This figure has been described as unrealistic by many involved in the current feeder formulae of GP2 and Formula 3, and one wonders just what effect diluting the talent pool even further will have on the level of competition faced by aspiring young drivers. Consequently, we will watch with interest as the situation develops.
