Goodwood’s 75th Members Meeting is fast approaching with its March 18-19 date, and the latest word is that the Gerry Marshall Trophy Race for Group 1 sedans will run into the dusk on Saturday evening. The two-driver, one-hour race will feature mandatory pit stops for driver changes, and be followed by a single-driver Sprint race on Sunday where the bulk of the grid — the winner and any cars that cover at least 95 percent of the winner’s distance — will be reversed. The event’s format will once again attract many of the great cars that raced in Group 1 championships around Europe during the 1970s and early ’80s, many in period liveries.
One machine that’s synonymous with Gerry Marshall — the Vauxhall Magnum DTV that he raced to class honors and 2nd overall in the 1977 Spa 24 Hours — will be making its Goodwood debut. The famous Vauxhall got a new owner last year and has since undergone a full “revitalization” program to get it ready for 75MM.
Also on hand will be a trio of period-authentic Ford Capris and plenty of other Group 1 classics — BMW 530s, Chevrolet Camaros, Ford Escorts, Mini 1275 GTs, Rover SD1s and Volkswagen Golf GTIs — all pedaled by well-known names. Already confirmed for the event are British Touring Car champions Tim Harvey and Andrew Jordan, along with fellow BTCC headliners Stuart Graham and Patrick Watts.
