This painting depicts Gilles Villeneuve wininng the 1979 USGP East at Watkins Glen. The victory, his third of the season, while certainly a great achievement, may not have been the highlight of the weekend. In wet conditions during Friday’s practice sessions, Gilles’s lap time was both stunning and amazing!
Powering his Ferrari 312 T4 around the circuit in his usual all-or-nothing style, he bettered the field by 9.5 seconds. Jody Scheckter, his teammate reportedly was astonished at this result as he believed his own lap time would be very competitive.
In the eyes of his fans around the world, this performance added to their belief that Gilles was the fastest driver of all time!
