Lotus was featured marque at the Goodwood Festival of Speed 2012, staged June 28 – July 1 on the 1.16-mile Goodwood hillclimb in West Sussex, England.

Few names are as synonymous with motor sport success as Lotus. From the kernel of an Austin Seven-based trials cars, company founder Colin Chapman created a globally-renowned brand, his ability to consistently break moulds and push envelopes resulting in 13 Formula One World Championships (six drivers’ titles and seven constructors’) and 79 Grands Prix wins.

In addition to celebrating 60 years of innovation and motor sport success, 2012 also marks the 50th anniversary of the ground-breaking Lotus Elan sports car, 40 years since the Esprit super car concept was first revealed by Giugiaro and 35 years since the innovative Lotus 78 ground effect Formula 1 car competed.

To celebrate this important legacy, and to honour the many legendary Lotus road cars, Saturday afternoon witnessed a cavalcade of Lotus greats with Sir Stirling Moss leading the way in the ex-Rob Walker 18 single-seater in which he scored the marque’s first Grand Prix win at Monaco in 1961. Many former Team Lotus drivers were in attendance including Emerson Fittipaldi, Jacky Ickx and Martin Donnelly along with aficionados such as Le Mans legends Tom Kristensen and Emanuele Pirro.

The 2012 Goodwood Festival of Speed further honored Lotus with the main ‘Central Feature’ installation, displayed prominently outside Goodwood House. The dramatic six-car 28-metre-high structure was designed by Gerry Judah, who commented, “The idea is to show the lightness of construction, which is the engineering ethos of Lotus. It’s easily my most innovative design yet.”

In the first of several photo galleries from the 2012 Goodwood Festival of Speed, Senior Photographer Tim Scott presents the following pictures that capture the many ‘Loti’ that participated in the event. To see more from Tim, visit fluidimages.co.uk.
