The Cartier Style et Luxe Concours d’Elegance at the 2013 Goodwood Festival of Speed was held 11-14 July on the lawns of Goodwood House in West Sussex, England. This year’s event celebrated the 20th anniversary of the Goodwood Festival of Speed. In line with the Festival’s ‘Best of the First 20 Years’ theme, the eight vehicle classes and cars on display at Goodwood reflected many of the greatest machines that have graced the Cartier Lawn over the last two decades.
Among the highlights was the one-off Phantom Corsair that first came to Goodwood in 2006, when it proceeded to gently move across the lawn by itself in the middle of the night with the engine off, the car in gear, and the handbrake firmly on. A car shrouded in mystery, the aptly-named Phantom was a six-seater coupe designed by Rust Heinz of the famous Heinz (57 Varieties) family. Built in 1938, Heinz lost his life in a car crash the following year and this curse has repeated itself with future owners who have met their demise in mysterious circumstances. Nonetheless, despite its morbid reputation the Phantom remains a stunning thing to behold.
A handful of historic Ferraris were also on display on the 2013 Cartier Style et Luxe lawn, two are particularly notable due to their unique history. The first was a 1955 Ferrari 250 GT Speciale originally commissioned by actress Ingrid Bergman, who was known as one of Ferrari’s best clients in the 1950s. In fact, the 250 GT is even finished in her own personal paint color called Grigio Ingrid but sadly, Bergman never actually took delivery of the car. Next was a 1953 Ferrari 250 Europa Pinin Farina finished in Bordeaux with a contrasting Bianco roof and sills. The car was commissioned by a friend of Battista Pininfarina, founder of the Carrozzeria Pininfarina coachbuilding company, one of Ferrari’s longest-standing design partners. A Ferrari 250 LM and 250 GT California Spider were also featured.
The evolution of the Porsche 911 was also illustrated on the 2013 Cartier Style et Luxe Concours lawn at Goodwood. On display was an example of the earliest 901 from 1963, a 1973 Carrera RS 2.7 Lightweight, among others. Other highlights included the 1929 Bugatti Type 41 Royale which left admirers blown away by its sheer presence and unrepeatable beauty of the Henri Binder Coupe de Ville coachwork, a beautiful 1938 Bugatti Type 57S Atlantic, a 1937 Mercedes-Benz 540K Spezial Roadster, 1954 Alfa Romeo 2000 Sportiva, the one-off 1954 Fiat Turbina, a 1954 Maserati A6 GCS by Frua and a 1957 Jaguar XKSS.
Unlike a traditional Concours d’Elegance, the judges at Goodwood are not all car experts but also personalities from the arts, with this year’s presenters including motor racing engineer Gordon Murray, Apple design guru Jonathan Ive, singer Simon Le Bon and his model wife Yasmin, TV presenter Kevin McCloud and designers Marc Newson and Terence Conran, among others. Judging itself is not a scientific points-scoring process, but a consideration of each car as an object of beauty and practicality. Best of Show at the 2013 Goodwood Cartier Style et Luxe Concours was awarded to the 1955 Lancia Aurelia B24S Spider entered by JD Classics.

Can you please tell me the name of the car behind the 1953 Ferrar1 250 Europa Pinna Farina in slide 31. It also appears behind the 1954 Fiat
Turbina Prototype. From the front it has Jaguar influences.
That’s the 1950 Talbot Lago T26 Saoutchik Grand Sport Coupe. Check out slide #41 for a better picture.
Thank you very much.
