In 1938, the first year of a completely new Grand Prix formula, Mercedes-Benz won five of the season’s seven major races. In these years, recalled Mercedes racing chief Alfred Neubauer, the Silberpfeil nickname began to be used widely because the new cars were lower and sleeker than ever, flashing by with a piercing howl in silvery glory.
