The Historic Motor Sports Association (HMSA) and Bonhams have announced a new series for under-two-liter sports racing cars built between 1950 and 1962 that will appear at both the HMSA’s Barber Historics and The Sommet des Legends in 2016.
The new U2 series will feature the “giant killer” sports racing cars from the 1950s such as the Lotus XI, Lola Mk1, Maserati 200S, Ferrari 500TR, Ferrari 196 Dino SP and Porsche 550/RSK/RS60-62. Drivers will be competing both on and off the track with awards given for race results and best giant-killing performance, as well as the most period-correct car on the grid and for the person and or team who best embodies the spirit of that original era.
In those days sports car racing was equally as important as Formula One. The major races of the day attracted all the top drivers with classes based on the type of car and the size of its engine. The under-two-liter cars served as a steppingstone for aspiring drivers hoping to make it big by challenging their larger-engined opponents in classic underdog fashion, driving cars from designers such as Colin Chapman of Lotus and Eric Broadley of Lola—both of whom could also be found racing and winning in their own creations.
This new series hopes to recreate the feeling of those days by showcasing the very special cars that made the racing so memorable. For complete information please visit www.hmsausa.com
