Horst Kroll started off his involvement with automobiles as an apprentice in the Porsche factory in Stuttgart. Porsche sent him to Canada in 1959 to assist at Volkswagen, Canada. By 1963, he was winning his first races both on ice and road circuits. In 1964, he won the first of his three Formula Vee championships, this one in a Canadian-built Huron Formula Vee, the second and third in a Kelly Vee. In 1967, driving a Kelly Porsche (a Lotus 23 Porsche-powered clone) he won the Under-2 liter Canadian Championship and in 1968 won the Canadian Championship overall.
In 1969, he competed in the Gulf Canada Series for Formula A cars and in the U.S. Continental Series in a Lola T142 and also became a constructor of the Altona Formula Vees. From 1970 to 1976, Horst was a consistent top-ten finisher in the Formula A Continental Series of Championship races.
