Eighty-six-year-old sports car racing legend John Fitch will attempt to enter the record books one more time when he takes to the Bonneville Salt Flats in a Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing.
Fitch will attempt to break the World Land Speed Record in the F/GT production class on August 18, when he will try to drive Mercedes-Benz enthusiast Bob Sirna’s 375 hp Gullwing over 170 mph through Bonneville’s famous measured mile. According to the ever-young Fitch, “Bonneville is a piece of cake. At Le Mans, I went faster than that, at night, in the rain…with ditches and trees both sides and no guard rails or chicanes to limit top speeds!” We’ll bring you word of Fitch’s record run in next month’s issue.
