On the evening of Saturday, September 2, during Historic Festival 35 presented by the Prestige Family of Fine Cars, Connecticut’s Lime Rock Park will host a party, the “60 Year Celebration,” that will not only celebrate six decades of tradition, beauty and speed at the track, but also kick-off fundraising for the “Legends of Lime Rock” commemorative area in A Paddock.
The celebration — cocktails, a sit-down, family style dinner, music, entertainment, auctions — will be highlighted by a special gathering of legends, people who are particularly important to Lime Rock’s history and legacy.
David Hobbs, PJ Jones, Sam Posey and Jim Haynes — all drivers at heart, of course, but each of whom became influential beyond the cockpit — will engage in a lively discussion about the history of the sport and Lime Rock Park. Expect invigorating repartee among these racing icons. In addition, Historic Festival 35 Honored Guest Richard Attwood and Honored Collector Bruce Meyer will be in attendance.
Then on Sunday, when the track is traditionally silent, Historic Festival 35 will celebrate Ferrari’s 70th anniversary by turning its attention to the Sunday in the Park Concours d’Elegance and Gathering of the Marques. The concours will showcase exquisite examples of prancing horsepower, headlined by a 1961 Ferrari 250 GT Berlinetta Competizione Speciale from the “Tifosi Fantasy” featured class display. The one-off alloy-bodied Pininfarina “aerodynamico” coupe, s/n 2429GT, built on a 250 short wheelbase chassis in the rare Comp61 specification, was special ordered from Ferrari by Maitre Paul Villard, a close friend of Enzo Ferrari, and the Paris attorney who represented the early 1960s French Ferrari agent Franco-Brittanic Automobiles. The car’s styling is based on the Ferrari Pininfarina 1960 Turin Show car.
Also on display will be 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO s/n 3647GT, one of 17 built as a right-hand-drive car, which has mastered such circuits as Mallory Park, Brands Hatch, Goodwood, Targa Florio and Nürburgring steered by John Surtees and Mike Parkes among others. Then there’s a 1963 Ferrari 250P/330P, s/n 0810, that took victory at its first outing at the 12 Hours of Sebring in 1963, driven by John Surtees and Lodovico Scarfiotti. The car also finished 3rd at Le Mans that year driven by Mike Parkes and Umberto Maglioli, and then won the Canadian Grand Prix for sports cars at Mosport in the hands of Pedro Rodriguez. The original 250 was converted to 330 specification in 1964.
Lime Rock’s “Favorite Son,” Sam Posey, will be reunited with the 1970 Ferrari 512M that he and Tony Adamowicz drove to 3rd place overall at Le Mans in 1971. The car, S/N 1020, was part of Luigi Chinetti’s North American Racing Team (NART) and also competed at Daytona, Sebring, Watkins Glen and Bonneville.
This year’s August 31- September 4 Lime Rock Park Historic Festival 35 presented by the Prestige Family of Fine Cars celebration will commence with the traditional Vintage Race and Sports Car Parade on August 31. For complete information please visit www.limerockhistorics.com
