On March 2, Louis Unser passed away at the age of 72. Unser was the older brother of Bobby and Al Unser, Sr. and followed the family tradition of racecar driving until 1964 when he was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. After retiring from active driving, Unser went to work for Shelby American building engines for the Cobra team and working as a member of their pit crew. In 1966, Unser started his own business of building race engines and working on racecars. Unser’s powerful engines took many drivers, including his brother Bobby and Mario Andretti, to victory in the famed Pikes Peak Hillclimb.
Unser is survived by LaVerne, his wife of 35 years, and his daughter Lynn.
