There is not much to read on Datsun racecars although I know that various cars were raced in the ’50s and ’60s. Prior to the Datsun 240Z, the Datsun 1600 and Datsun 2000 held their own very well with the MG, Austin Healy 3000 and other like cars of their vintage. I am the proud owner of a 1966 Datsun 1600. With little modification except for a shortened driveshaft, we recently dropped a 5-speed Datsun 2000 transmission into the car and bored out the original engine, which is now rated at 165 hp. The great thing about these cars is that they are still relatively inexpensive, even though the quality of same meets and exceeds its more expensive counterparts. It would sure be nice if these cars were given the credit due them. They are fine automobiles that still can run circles around other cars of their era.
