Historic Motorsport Holdings, Ltd. (HMH), the group which holds interests in HSR, SVRA and HSR-West, has announced the creation of a new national driver’s championship to be called the Vintage Road Race of Champions (VRRC).
Plans for the new championship, which is slated for 2003, is to have a single national vintage championship event similar to the SCCA’s annual Run-Offs. Drivers in any one of 14 different formula, production and sports racer categories can qualify for the annual 4-day event by either performance in two of six regional qualification races or by applying based on results from any acknowleged vintage racing organization. According to HMH, “The concept behind the VRRC acknowledges the changes that have taken place in vintage racing – that there has been a gradual shift over the years from the high speed parading to something more closely approximating real racing competition. The VRRC recognizes that skill in driving is a legitimate factor that deserves recognition. Although the cars remain the stars, that they are conducted around the circuit in a manner worthy of their heritage is also to be celebrated.”
