The vintage racers of the Vintage Sports Car Club of America (VSCCA) were the stars at the 4th Annual New Jersey Vintage Grand Prix and Family Festival, held May 27-29, 2011 at New Jersey Motorsports Park in Millville.
The New Jersey Vintage Grand Prix 2011 was the largest yet with an airshow at the neighboring Millville Airport, while the infield of Thunderbolt Raceway at New Jersey Motorsports Park was filled with all kinds of attractions such as World War II re-enactment divisions, Boy Scout encampments, car auctions and shows, live entertainment, among others.
On Saturday, one of the featured events was a motorcycle ride to help veterans and the Wounded Warrior project. I didn’t count the riders but a seemingly endless stream came into the facility around noon, followed by buses filled with wheelchair-bound veterans. It showed us what the Memorial Day Weekend is really all about.
On-track action was divided into six VSCCA groups including: Pre War & Preservation, Under 2-liter, Over 2-liter, Formula & Sports Racers, Big Bore, and newer Formula & Sports Racers. There were a number of beautiful cars this year, some looking like they should be in a car show rather then on track. This event is growing every year as the racers and community work together to put on a very good show, something that the vintage racing fan shouldn’t miss.
