The 1970 Le Mans 24 hours is immortalized in the the Steve McQueen film Le Mans, with much of the film’s footage taken from that race. Rain fell heavily throughout the night, and this was the first time the traditional “Le Mans start,” in which drivers ran across the track to enter their cars at the beginning, was replaced by a variant in which the drivers were already seated in their cars. It was also the race where Porsche won for the first time.
“Night Vision” by John Ketchell depicts the Ferrari 512S entered by N.A.R.T. in the Coda Lunga version for Sam Posey and Ronnie Bucknum charging through the heavy rain and darkness toward an eventual 4th-place finish overall, the first of the 11 512S entries from Ferrari.
