My dream, like many racing drivers, was to get to the top of the sport Formula One. Some of us may be in the right place at the right time with a big, or a successful team. Others are just there to make up the numbers. Unfortunately, for me, I was part of the latter list—I started with RAM Racing, owned by John MacDonald—the car was like a German tank from the Panzer division. Much of my Grand Prix career was in such cars. In total I entered 116 Grand Prix races, but along the way acquired a certain poor reputation for driving.
Le Mans offered me my best opportunities in motor racing. In 1983, I got the opportunity of racing with Mario and Michael Andretti at Le Mans. A fantastic situation, a dream. At that time, it was impossible for me to imagine I could be racing at Le Mans—even more so to do it with Mario and Michael Andretti. But, sometimes a driver is in the right place at the right time—this was my right time and right place. I drove a Kremer Porsche with the legendary Mario Andretti. It’s there for all to see.
