It all began when Ferdinand Porsche opened his development and consulting firm, Dr. Ing. h. c. F. Porsche GmbH, in Stuttgart in 1931. An early assignment came from the German government to develop a “people’s car,” and the Beetle was born. In 1939, Porsche used many Beetle parts to develop the Porsche 64. While it was the first Porsche, only one was built before Germany’s production capabilitiies were focused on things other than cars.
