As any racer knows, scratches are an inevitable part of racing. In particular, Plexiglas windscreens, windows, and headlight covers take a real beating, and unlike glass, they can’t be cleaned with chemicals like Windex. Likewise, gel-coated fiberglass surfaces take an equal beating, resulting in telltale ugly white scratches.
A German company, Quixx, offers an inexpensive kit (US$14.95), which was touted as being able to remove scratches and scuffs from both Plexiglas and gel-coat surfaces, so we thought we’d put it to the test. First we tested the kit on an old piece of badly damaged Plexiglas. Using the included wet/dry sandpaper we wet-sanded the test area for several minutes, then using the included polishing cloth and polish, polished the surface, with a circular motion for several minutes. The result was a marked improvement over the badly scratched and scuffed surface that we started with. A few circular, micro-scratches could still be detected, but these would likely be eliminated with more wet-sanding and elbow grease.
