Update, 8/26/09: Bonhams reported four additional sales post-block, highlighted by the 1938 Peugeot 402 Darl’mat Legere ‘Special Sport’ Roadster that sold for $777,000.
The 2009 Bonhams & Butterfields “Quail Lodge, Exceptional Motorcars and Automobilia featuring the Sidney H. Craig Collection and property from the Reggie Jackson Collection” was held Friday, August 14th at the Quail Lodge Resort in Carmel, California.
Bonhams & Butterfields’ 12th annual auction, held in connection with The Quail, A Motorsport Gathering, featured more than 100 cars highlighted by the 1939 Auto Union D-Type V12 Grand Prix Racing Car that did not sell at a high bid of $6,000,000.
Bonhams offered 102 automobiles for sale, with 62 finding new owners, reflecting a 60.7% sales rate. The total automotive sales volume was $14,284,288, inclusive of buyer’s premiums. The average price per car sold was $230,391.
Bonhams’ 2008 Quail Lodge auction sold 44 of 77 cars (57%) for total sales of $21,004,800, assisted by the 1960 Jaguar E2A Prototype that hammered for $4,957,000 and the 1939 Talbot-Lago T150C SS Teardrop Coupe that sold for $4,847,000. The average price per car sold was $477,381.

1933 Duesenberg Model J Torpedo Victoria Convertible – Sold for $1,437,000 versus pre-sale estimate of $1,200,000 – $1,600,000. Chassis 2535, engine J-384 was first owned by cinema cowboy William Boyd a.k.a. Hopalong Cassidy. Sold without reserve.
1962 Ghia 6.4L Coupe – Sold for $117,000 versus pre-sale estimate of $185,000 – $225,000. Owned by Gary Morton (Lucille Ball’s second husband) and later modified for its second owner Dean Martin by the King of the Kustomizers, George Barris. Sold without reserve.
1958 Cadillac Eldorado Brougham – Sold for $117,000 versus pre-sale estimate of $275,000 – $325,000. Previously owned by Frank Sinatra. Sold without reserve.
1930 Cadillac 452 V-16 Sedan – Sold for $309,500 versus pre-sale estimate of $250,000 $300,000. Attributed to Al Capone, outfitted with 1/4″ steel armor plating and five-ply bullet-resistant glass. Sold without reserve.
1935 Lincoln Model K V-12 Phaeton – Sold for $348,000 versus pre-sale estimate of $300,000 – $350,000. Ex-Franklin Delano Roosevelt California Campaign Parade Car. Sold without reserve.
1931 Bentley 4½ Liter ‘Birkin Style’ Tourer with original Supercharger – Sold for $804,500 versus pre-sale estimate of $900,000 – $1,000,000.
1973 Porsche 911 RS Touring Sold for $232,500 versus pre-sale estimate of $180,000 – $240,000.
1963 Fiat 1600S O.S.C.A. Fissore Coupe – Sold post-sale for $42,705 versus pre-sale estimate of $60,000 – $90,000.
