You may recall that back in April I wrote on these pages about the unprecedented pace that the collector car hobby had gotten off to this year, at what has historically been the largest collector car sale in the world, Scottsdale. This past January, in the arid Arizona desert, five auction houses worked separately for seven days to sell 2,234 collector vehicles for a mind-boggling $229 million.
However, apparently this was only the warm-up act, because during this year’s Monterey Classic Car Week, five auction companies, held just four days of sales and yet recorded an unprecedented $301.9 million in sales…and this from only 726 sold vehicles…and at a venue where auctions aren’t even the main focus! For those keeping track at home, when added together with the many European sales on this year’s calendar, the collector car auction world will easily surpass $1 billion in total sales this year…that’s billion with a “B.”
