In the first part of this interview, Rick Hall told of his initial foray into the world of automotive engineering, firstly as a boy with the family business and eventually working for British Racing Motors. His BRM career was in two parts; his initial stint with Sir Alfred Owen and Tim Parnell, then with Louis Stanley—who he described as pompous, arrogant and self-opinionated. Just prior to the demise of BRM, Rick looked for pastures new and got together with BRM colleague Rob Fowler setting up Hall & Fowler, a race preparation and restoration business. In this second part of the interview, Vintage Racecar’s European Editor, Mike Jiggle, discusses those early days of Hall and Fowler, Hall’s relationship with the late Tom Wheatcroft, the past, present and future of historic motor racing and today’s business of Hall & Hall.
So, you and Rob Fowler leave Louis Stanley’s BRM and set up business on your own. What was the start like?
