One of the finest collections of ’50s and ’60s sports racing cars ever assembled by a single owner will cross RM’s auction block at its Battersea Park location in London as part of the St. James Concourse of Elegance on September 7-9. That owner, Irvine Laidlaw, considers himself an enthusiast rather than a collector, and since he’s stopping racing has decided to make his Laidlaw Competition Car Collection available for sale.
The highlight of the collection is the ex-works, ex-Ecurie Ecosse 1955 Jaguar D-Type (chassis XKD 504), a long-nose example driven in period by Duncan Hamilton, Paul Frère and Peter Sutcliffe. Among the other significant cars in the collection are: the 1958 Maserati 250S (chassis 2432), the only 250S originally built with a 2.5-liter engine, that was raced by Carroll Shelby and Jim Hall; the ex-Scuderia Camoradi 1960 Maserati Tipo 61 Birdcage (chassis 2464) driven by Masten Gregory and Gino Munaron; the ex-Ecurie Francorchamps 1966 Ferrari 275 GTB/C Berlinetta Competizione (chassis 09027) that finished 10th at Le Mans that year; an ex-works 1965 Porsche 904/6 (chassis 906-012) once raced by Peter Nöcker and Günther Klass; and a pair of Chevrons, a 1970 B16 (chassis DBE-B16-4) and a 1971 B19 (chassis B19-71-3).
