George Follmer has been named the Guest of Honor at this year’s annual pre-Long Beach Grand Prix Road Racing Drivers Club banquet, scheduled for Thursday, April 14 at the Long Beach Hilton.
Follmer could, of course, drive the wheels off of anything, and did. He tackled all the sport’s various disciplines, Can-Am, Trans-Am, World Endurance, Indycars, Formula One, Formula 5000, NASCAR and IMSA, with his characteristic tenacity, bagging four professional road racing championships in the process. He took the USRRC crown as a giant-killer in 1965, won both the Can-Am and Trans-Am titles in 1972 — the only time anyone has ever won two major championships in the same season — and then repeated as Trans-Am champ in 1976. Along the way he logged 37 professional wins on 22 circuits in four countries.
Now he will treat the banquet audience to illuminative tales from that stellar career, and is sure to enthrall his audience just as he did those watching from trackside when he drove. Outdoor cocktails among a selection of famous Follmer cars will commence at 6 p.m., followed by dinner at 7:15 sharp. For complete information please visit www.rrdc.org
