As you’ll see from the extensive coverage, on both sides of the magazine this month, this year’s Monterey Car Week and Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion was another massive, banner year. Yet, despite great attendance numbers at the track—both in terms or participants and spectators—there was an underlying air of worry among those in the know.
Track management had learned that the Monterey County Supervisors were considering an offer from ISC (International Speedway Corp.) to take over the concession to operate Laguna Seca. Currently, the track is run by (and the Rolex Reunion organized by) SCRAMP, the Sports Car Racing Association of the Monterey Peninsula, a 501(c)4 not-for-profit. If ISC took over the contract for Laguna Seca, it would follow that ISC would inherit the Rolex Reunion along with it. What implications might that have for the future of the event? Before considering this, it’s helpful to look back at how SCRAMP came to this fork in the road.
