By honoring 45 years of Carroll Shelby’s Mustangs and a full century of Alfa Romeos, The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering, celebrated its eighth renewal during this year’s Monterey Classic Car Week. Crowds once again flocked onto the grounds of the Quail Lodge golf course in Carmel Valley to soak in the ambience attendant to the display of exquisite automobiles that has made the event famous. If the machinery on hand wasn’t sufficiently satisfying for the 3,000 privileged attendees, they also had access to an array of fine food and libations supplied by select local restaurants and wineries.
This year, beyond the numerous Shelby Mustangs (plus Cobras and GT40s) and Alfa Romeos, additional attention was paid to Alfa Romeo Special Coachbuilders, Milestone Cars of 1934, and The Great Ferraris. The Rolex trophy for Best in Show was presented to Californians Ken and Ann Smith–along with a nice watch. Their winning entry was a 1936 Delahaye 135 Competition Disappearing Top Convertible that had been restored by Hill & Vaughn of Santa Monica, California during the 1990s.
The ninth annual Motorsports Gathering at the Quail has been scheduled for August 19, 2011. Order your tickets now from www.quaillodge.com
