The Automobile Club de l’Ouest and Motoring Cavalcades have announced that they will be hosting a special historic race in conjunction with this summer’s running of the 24-Hours of Le Mans. This new event known as “Le Mans Legends” will be held on Saturday June 16, 2001, and will include a stunning field of original postwar Le Mans racers from 1949 to 1964.
Over 30 cars, most with original Le Mans race history, have requested entry including significant examples by manufacturers such as Ferrari, Aston Martin, Lotus, Talbot-Lago, Frazer Nash, Maserati and AC. Also included in this list will be a contingent of Jaguars celebrating the 50th anniversary of the marque’s first victory at the Sarthe. Of particular interest is the announcement that VRJ’s own Sir Stirling Moss will be racing the Jaguar C-Type that Duncan Hamilton and Tony Rolt drove to victory at Le Mans in 1953. In addition to Moss, other famous Le Mans names who are expected to take part include Tony Brooks, John Coombes, Roy Salvadori, Jack Sears and John Young.
Separate race classes for this special event will be divided into cars over or under 2-liters within the years of 1949-1953, 1954-1957, 1958-1960 and 1961-1964. Awards will be given to the first three finishing positions overall and the first three places in each class and engine group.
