Northern California’s Classic Sports Racing Group has announced that a special pair of cars will join more than 200 other entries to grace its annual Charity Challenge event, set for October 1-2 at Sonoma Raceway.
The first of the two is a 1953 HWM-Alta Grand Prix car (above) that in period raced against the best from Ferrari, Maserati and Alfa Romeo, while the second is a Lola T70-Ford Can-Am car that was driven in period by both Mario Andretti and Parnelli Jones, though it carried an experimental DOHC Ford Indy V8 at that time instead of the pushrod Ford V8 that now powers it.
Among the most popular features of the Charity Challenge weekend are the midday spectator rides where some 40-60 cars of varying types are made available for three-lap rides around Sonoma Raceway in return for a tax-deductible donation to the Sonoma chapter of The Speedway Children’s Charities., for which, to date, CSRG has raised more than $750,000.
Advance sale, discounted tickets are available through the Sonoma Raceway site, www.racesonoma.com
