Widespread during Monterey Week was the rumor that a Ferrari 250 GTO privately traded hands for a whopping $30,000,000. And yes, that is not a typo.
Sports Car Digest has yet to definitively confirm the rumor, but the sale is very believable as Ferrari prices have been on a tear, particularly for the very finest models. The best confirmation of the sale we have found is the typical, “I know a guy who knows a guy that knows the buyer.”
Therefore, if you know the buyer, you are the buyer or you hold insider information of this milestone deal, please contact Sports Car Digest at mail@sportscardigest.com or post a response below, so we can put this trade on the books.
While $30,000,000 may be a mind-blowing amount of money to pay for a car, the buyer is also buying a true work of art and one of only 36 Ferrari 250 GTOs, the most famous of all Ferraris. Compared to the price paid for a Jackson Pollock, a Picasso or a Monet, this rumored sale has to be considered a sensible purchase.
I bought it.
I heard that the actual price was $28.5 million. Either way, it is steep.
Last time I checked you couldn’t race a Picasso…that gives the edge to the Ferrari.
Have you heard about Fabrizio Violati? He has owned his GTO 3851 since 1965 – I wonder if he finally cashed in at the top of the market?
Wow, 30 millions is a lot of money, but this is a piece of art.
Thats just crazy man 30mil for a ferrari. I was complaining about spending 100k for a porsche.
Rumor has it John McCain has purchased the car as a running mate….
I wouldn’t pay $3000 for that old clunker..some people need to get it straight..more money then brains!
Rumor has it that the car is about to go on the block again. Have heard that a guy in SD or LA handled the private transaction, and received a new Bentley Convertible as compensation! Damn!
A.J.
Haven’t heard that yet, although we cannot imagine that the car would trade for a premium right now. Interesting nonetheless.
Rumor. Not even the best GTO in the world would bring $30M. It’s worth more like half of that…
