The 2nd annual Quail Motorsports gathering, held on August 13, quickly proved itself to be one of the “must do” events of the very busy Monterey Historics weekend. Organized as a very exclusive concours, at Carmel Valley’s Quail Lodge, “The Quail” brought together a stunning collection of 125 historic sports and racing cars, and in the process raised a significant amount of money for local charities.
While Ferrari and the Mille Miglia served as this year’s focus, the centerpiece of this year’s event was undoubtedly the dozen Ferrari GTOs that stormed onto the grounds from Laguna Seca, justbefore lunch. In addition to the GTOs, this year’s Quail also featured everything from Ferrari Testa Rossas and Aston Martin DB4GT Zagatos to an Austin Healey 100S and a Hispano Suiza-engined dragster!
Crowds at the Quail are intentionally kept small—due in no small part to the $150 admission—however, that admission does also include unlimited food and beverages at any one of the four pavilions featuring gourmet food, wine and beer from California, Italy, France and Germany. Besides the relaxed atmosphere, the beautiful cars, the gourmet dining and even a free massage, the Quail offered a number of unique, luxury features not found at any other concours.
