Nine-time 24 Hours of Le Mans winner, six-time 24 Hours of Sebring winner and 2013 FIA World Endurance champion Tom Kristensen (above, right) will share his experiences as guest speaker at the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion’s annual Picnic in the Paddock on Saturday, August 19. Joining the legendary Dane on the picnic stage will be motorsports historian Murray Smith, who will ensure that Kristensen doesn’t leave anything out.
Kristensen raced for some 37 years, earning the sobriquet of “Mr. Le Mans” while becoming the most decorated sports car driver in history. He will reflect on his entire career, including his participation in the American Le Mans Series, of which he was crowned champion in 2002. His championship-winning career began in karts, where he was Danish champion from 1984 to 1986, followed by Formula Three championships in Japan (1991) and Germany (1993), but his mark was made on the sport in endurance racing where he set the aforementioned records for the most victories at Le Mans and Sebring.
This year’s Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion takes place August 17-20 at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, with this year’s event honoring the Diamond Jubilee of Formula Junior and the 70th anniversary Ferrari as well as celebrating the 60th anniversary of the raceway itself. The Picnic in the Paddock commences on the Saturday at 12:30 p.m. outside the Rolex Drivers’ Club at Turn 3, providing a rare opportunity for fans to bring their lunch, listen to stories and ask questions.
