Road Racing Drivers Club (RRDC) member Archie Urciuoli garnered the 2005 overall points championship in Historic Sportscar Racing’s Historic GTP/Group C series, driving his 1984 Porsche 956 to four victories in eight season events.
The HSR Historic GTP/Group C Championship is a season-long competition for historic prototype cars, primarily those from the IMSA GTP and FIA Group C era of the 1980s and early 1990s.
The class includes purpose-built GTP racecars, such as the Jaguar XJR, Lola, March, Nissan, Porsche 956/962, Chevrolet Intrepid, Spice and Toyota, whose speeds and lap times continue to outpace many modern racecars.
Urciuoli, who entered his first SCCA race in 1959, is the ninth winner of the HSR “Grand Champion” GTP trophy, which was first won by former RRDC President Bob Akin in 1999.
“Winning the overall GTP championship is a thrill,” said the 68-year-old Urciuoli, “especially since ‘historic’ is a term that applies to me, as well as the series. I really owe it to Porsche Motorsports and MCR Racing, since the key to it was finishing every race.”
