Two hundred classic cars from all over Europe will take part in the 21st Silver Flag hillclimb in Vernasca, in the Italian province of Piacenza, on June 17-19, to celebrate the Alfa Romeo’s racing heritage.
“We received over 300 applications for just 200 spaces available,” revealed event organizer Claudio Casali. “It was a challenging task, but we selected only the most iconic and those that best represent the spirit of the Silver Flag hillclimb.”
The event remains loyal to its traditional three nine-kilometer runs up the hill during the weekend — on closed roads and with no timekeepers. Another feature will be the “Dynamic Restoration and Conservation Concours,” where a jury will select the “Best Restored” or “Most Original” cars for each category.
In celebration of Alfa Romeo, more than 70 racing cars from the Milanese brand will be taking part, including several from the Alfa Romeo Museum. One of the great Alfa Romeo drivers, Arturo Merzario, will be on hand to drive the Giulietta Sprint Zagato in which he began his career.
Beyond Alfa Romeo, more than 30 marques will be taking part, including Abarth and Lancia — where Sandro Munari will drive the Stratos with which he won four editions of the Rallye Monte Carlo — as well as British machinery from BRM, Cooper, Lotus, Brabham, Ford, Allard, Alvis and MG, French Matras, and a rare Veritas and several 1960s prototypes from Porsche.
