Formula Atlantic celebrates its 35th season in 2008, standing as the second oldest training category in the world, behind only British Formula 3. Despite this admirable longevity, however, the series entered its landmark season facing an uncertain future after the reunification of IndyCar racing, following a dozen years of civil war, left Atlantic among its vast collateral damage. Fortunately, for more than half of those 35 years, the championship has been directed by Vicki O’Connor; and now, with a little help from her friends, she’s again steering a course toward calmer waters. Among its countless graduates, Atlantic numbers two F1 World Champions—as well as the iconic Gilles Villeneuve—five winners of seven U.S. National Championships, six Indy 500 winners and, most recently, dual Grand-Am champions in Jon Fogarty and Alex Gurney. Here, Vintage Racecar Associate Editor John Zimmermann discusses the series’ glorious past and unfolding future with the first lady of the formula.
