Long-time readers of VR, will be familiar with the period photography of Allen Kuhn. From 1956 until 1965, Kuhn worked as a staff photographer for Sports Car Journal and California Sports Car Magazine covering the burgeoning California road-racing scene. However, Kuhn stopped shooting racing after 1965 and gave no further thought to his archive of negatives, until a chance meeting with VR publisher Casey Annis at a historic race in 1998. Seeing a few samples of Kuhn’s period photographs, Annis encouraged Kuhn to preserve his archive and make it available to the public. As a result, over the past 10 years, Kuhn’s photographs have found a very warm reception from a new audience of enthusiasts and have graced the pages of numerous magazines including this one.
Kuhn has recently introduced a newly revised site that now features hundreds of his photographs, complete with detailed captions and a useful search engine that allows one to find photographs by driver, track, year, and car. Whether you’re looking for a specific print or just want to take a fun trip down memory lane, this is a great site packed with some fascinating West Coast race history.
